Problem setting up Suse 8.1

Hi, I have a old PIII system on which I am trying to install Suse 8.1
and as soon as I boot from CD and the kernel is loaded, it throws some
error and doesn't proceed further.

Kernel panic : unable to mount vfs on root=""

Could somebody please help me what this message means and how to solve
this.
