I'm running Red Hat 9 (standard "workstation" installation) on an HP
Pavilion 5210 laptop with 64 MB RAM. It works fine, but everything is
very, very slow. Sometimes when I have not touched it for several
minutes, I can hear and see that the hard drive is still being
accessed.
Is it possible to shut off some of the processes that seem to grab
memory (even though they are sleeping)? If so, how, so that they
don't have to be shut off manually at each reboot?
The Gnome system monitor shows:
CPU used jumping back and forth between 2.97% and 15.84%
Memory Used 52.9 MB Total 59.9 MB
Swap Used 53.6 MB Total 188 MB
Processes:
bonobo-activation-server 504 K
eggcups 2.4 MB
fam 384 K
gconfd-2 6.9 MB
gnome-panel 6.9 MB
gnome-session 3.4 MB
ssh-agent 236 K
gnome-system-monitor 5.0 MB
gnome-system-monitor 4.8 MB (I had it open in 2 windows)
magicdev 1.4 MB
metacity 3.5 MB
nautilus 6.8 MB
notification-area-applet 2.2 MB
pam-panel-icon 1.6 MB
python 5.8 MB
xscreensaver 624 K
Thanks!
