Add more RAM, take a look at the RELEASE-NOTES on the first CD and
you'll find;
Memory:
- Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
- Minimum for graphical: 128MB
- Recommended for graphical: 192MB
Use a different GUI desktop/manager both Gnome and KDE both use lots of
memory. Many others to choose from; http://xwinman.org/
