Thanks Doug Laidlaw and Lenard for your input.

I did the first type as mentioned in the reply. I burned a CD with the
.iso image - did not do anything to the .iso file to make it look like
the files in the install cd that came with the book. I do not know how
to do it. However, now that I have successfully installed an older
version of the RH 9, is there a way I can update to the latest version
of OS. the book says RH 9 (2.4.20-06) and the book was published in
May 2003.

How should I have made the cd 1 (or all of the CDs) to make it (them)
look like the CD from the book - so that i could have installed the OS
from the 4 cds. http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/neroburning.html -
if the information present in this link is fine, then nothing to worry.
I will follow the steps mentioned in this link.

Coming to the network issue, I was not able to configure the network
connection - I probably have to spend sometime with the book/ur email
and the links and try to set up a connection. both the wired and the
wireless conneciton. both of them are not working. i

the connections for the VMware - XP (I have another XP virtual machine
apart from the host XP) are working fine in the XP virtual. at home
the XP virtual machine was able to go to the internet without any
hiccups.

SInce it is VM ware, it is not a dual boot - the local machine is as
though I have got a new machine from Best buy.

I have to figure out how to connect to the network. the book was
released in 2003. the cd probably was of a version of late 2002 or
early 2003. the integrated wirless network cards were just the
beginning.

probably the CDs when burnt right from the iso CDs 1 through 4 might be
able to detect the network cards easily.

I will let you know.

thanks once again for your patience and your willingness to help.

regards
Ravi.
