I'm trying to set up Mandrake 10.1 on an elderly Gateway 2000 whose CD
drive won't read disks burned by any of my CD writers. It has these
partitions:
Disk1:
2043MB Unformatted - reserved for Linux installation
2039.5MB NTFS Windows NT4.0
1043.3MB FAT32 Windows 98
2894.5MB FAT32 Mandrake Linux release media
Disk 2
5122.3MB NTFS data
635.4MB NTFS backup of windows NT
376.5MB FAT16 backup of windows 98
I've copied the release media over the network onto a partition of the
1st hard disk as shown above, and made a boot disk with the help of
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/hd_grub.cgi with the follwoing menu.lst:
timeout 0
default 0
title Mandrake Install
root (hd0,4)
kernel /mandrake/isolinux/alt0/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=128000
root=/dev/ram3 acpi=ht vga=788
automatic=method:disk,partition=hda5,directory=/mandrake
initrd /mandrake/isolinux/alt0/all.rdz
This gets quite far into the installation, leading me to believe that
it's possibly found the release media files, then stops with an error
message: Error: No disk drive found
Can anyone advise a) how come it seemed to find the release media on a
hard disk but still can't find a disk drive, and more importantly b)
how do I determine what disk driver is required?
