I think the key to Perry's query was that he is new to Linux (hence
contacting a setup newsgroup). He is using the GUI tools provided for
setting his system up and specifically the Display control panel. This
has a drop-down list of available resolutions, and in his case it
offers only two low resolutions. His hardware is obviously capable of
better and so he is asking how to do that. If possible without
recompiling the kernel.

I'm actually interested in this because I have a similar issue - a
graphics card and monitor capable of 1600 x 1200 but only offered a
maximum of 800 x 600 by the Display control panel (in my case, under
Fedora Core 2).
