FC3 & Radeon 9800 Pro Crashes

I currently have SLackware 10.1 *somewhat* running on my system, but I
also went to install Fedora 3 over the weekend, but it seems the
XServer is dying unexpectedly during the installation process. It gets
to the point where it begins reading the RPMS to install onto the
system, and maybe even sometimes installs a few... then X dies and I'm
told I can reboot my system. It doesn't even freeze or lock... I hit
CTL+ALT+DEL and it goes into a graceful shutdown as if I entered
'shutdown -r now'.

My video card is a Radeon 9800 Pro, which, from what I've read online,
isn't very well supported under Linux (crying shame). I'm able to use
the ATI driver under Slackware pretty well, but since I can't even get
Fedora to the point where it'll install without crashing, I'm kinda
stuck as to what to do.

Furthermore, my new system has been plagued by Sig11/Segfault problems
(in Slackware) all week, but it seems to be more stable now that I
lowered the FSB to 166 from 200... I did several kernel compiles under
Slackware and it didn't crash once... so that tells me my hardware
problems are potentially accounted for, and that this Fedora crash is
an unrelated issue. Can anyone confirm this?

And furthermore, is there a way around installed Fedora with this video
card without it crashing all the time? I suppose I could install in
text-based mode, then upgrade my driver to the ATI one afterwards...
but is there another way> A better way?

TIA!
