18 hours into my 1st linux and things aren't going well...

I thought I would try linux and so far it has been frustrating. I have
one issue in particular that is crippling me, I can't seem to change
the display resolution. I'm running RH 9 on IBM thinkpad 600e(old
notebook)

I change the resolution to 1024x768, click OK, it tells me I need to
restart xerver. I reboot the machine and the settings are still the
old 800x600. I've tried Ctrl+Alt+backsapce (read that somewhere) and
that doesn't appear to do anything except log me out.

What else could I be missing? What are the steps to change display
resolution with linux (if I can generalize... maybe I can't?)

Thanks for any help!
Steve
