The system has been running long years with OS/2. I want now to install SuSE
v9.2 on it (multi-boot), with separate partitions for /boot, Swap, /home,
/var, etc., and am encountering a problem. This is my first venture into the
    Linux world.

I had been advised by someone whose judgement I trust, to make my partitions
with a utility designed for the purpose, DFSee, rather than leaving this to
SuSE, and then using SuSE to format them. Accordingly, the partitions now
exist on the single SCSI hard disk, with the correct type designation (0x83
for all except the Swap partition, which is 0x82), but are not formatted.

I first began the installation process with the "Installation" option, and
all went swimmingly until the stage at which YaST shows the Installation
Settings window, and tries to propose a partitioning arrangement. At this
point, the Change button does nothing, and the system sits and ponders,
occasionally using the CD Reader, for a measured hour and a half. Clearly,
this is not the way to go.

I next tried beginning with "Manual Installation", hoping to be given an
opportunity to format my partitions and determine their mount points.
Instead, after a series of choices which do not stand out in my memory, the
system arrived at the self-same stage, and went again into its siege mode.
Whether I missed the opportunity to format, or chose a wrong path to get
there, the result is the same.

It seems likely that, once the formatting and mount-point determination is
passed, the process will again go smoothly. Can someone tell me how to do
this, or refer me to a web document that will help me?

The only book I have about this OS is the "SuSE Linux 9 Bible", which seems
of little help for non-default installations. I have also made a search of
the Web, in the hope of finding guidance, but unsuccessfully.
