Wait. Back up. Post the errors you're seeing.
When you say you "installed the packages", what exactly did you do? Install
the latest kernel-source RPM from RedHat, or the distribution kernel-source
RPM (which is slightly older). How and where did you install the
manufacturer's drivers? And when you ran "make xconfig", what was the error?
By the way, I personally dislike the "make xconfig". I like to copy in the
appropriate old config file, usually in /usr/linux-[version]/configs in the
RedHat distributed kernel sources, run "make menuconfig" and do it all in a
non-X window. It can also be useful to review the resulting .config files
for changes against the old kernel config file, so you know if you've
changed anything else by accident.
And by the way, ignore Peter Breuer. He seems to get his jollies by shoving
his nose up in the air at newbies as if that somehow meant he had any clue
how to help them and weren't so overwhelmingly occupied with affairs of
state as to lower himself to their level. He usually has *NO IDEA* how to
address the actual problem, just spews silliness at them about "reading the
docs" instead of offering a hint of where to look.
