Packages description

Sorry for this stupid question !

When someone is processing a custom installation of Linux, the wizzards
included within the distributions display a category-structured list of
the different packages, with a text description, and the release
numbers.
This list must be based upon file(s) or a small database...

Is there a way to display (and eventually print) this list before to
perform the setup process ?
