Don't let any biased *** jiggler tell you one linux is better than
another, a kernel is a kernel is a kernel. Since you have FC2 I believe
you can still use the 2.4 kernel version instead of the more beefy 2.6.
What you do is compile your own kernel using only the options that are
needed to run your system. It's obvious if you don't have any I2C
chipsets you don't need I2C support. Choose everything to be static and
not a module to be loaded as load times can hinder such an old PC.
Also, don't expect to get it right the first time you compile your own
kernel. It's seldom a newbie gets their kernel cherry popped and does it
right on the first time, like sex.
A place to start to know what you need in there and what you don't is by
running an lsmod to see what modules are in there and running right now.
Compile those in as static support and make sure you select your
processor type.
I won't go into detail about compiling a kernel because there are too
many howto's out there for me to feel good about myself rehashing.
However this is your only solution to your speed deficit. That and
getting some more RAM if you can find it. Oh and I hope you set up swap
space that at least triples the amount of ram you have in size. No swap
+ low RAM = waiting for days for X to load.
I use a P2 266mhz with 380MB ram to run a
firewall/router/gateway/nat/IDS machine from without a problem, and
that's a big job for such a crappy old PC.
