NFS problems, as it tries to check the location and permissions of your home
directories and goes from / to /home to /home/username. If you've got a
dead NFS mount at, say /nfs, it will have difficulty and keep waiting for
NFS timeouts. I've seen this for years, particular with hard-mounts at the /
directory instead of being properly down a directory or two.

Alternatively, someone has rooted your boxes and the load on them is now
ridiculous with their DDOS attacks on someone else, or some other weird
issue I can't think of off the bat.
