Power off at shutdown

I am trying to get my PC to poweroff after shutting down.
I compiled kernel 2.6.12.5 with APM and the Bios has APM turned on as well.

This is on a computer that was running on kernel 2.4 and it worked just
fine. Since install/compiling a new 2.6 system for the machine the power
off has stopped working.

Is 2.6 poweroff different than 2.4?
