Partition (2) and (3) total 53 GB. This is 3 GB more than original 50 GB
C: partition. Looks like (3), your designated Linux partition, has
overlapped partition (4), the Recovery. Not a good thing. With the
installation of Ubuntu, you may have wiped out all the data and files on
    your Recovery partition.

This is a Windows "hidden" partition, that the OS NEEDS to operate
properly. Yes, I know it says it's unallocated space, but do NOT
delete it or have another partition use the space. It's at the very end
    of the drive, right?

    Yes, something is definitely amiss....

    > BTW, the cluster for winxp is 4k....and page is 1536

Overall, I'd say your partition set up is messed up. It needs to be
fixed. Before you do anything else, does Ubuntu boot? If it does, open a
terminal window and type this command: /sbin/fdisk -l /dev/hda

This will list your hard drive and partition info. Post it here.

I need to know how that unallocated space is designated. Whether it
really IS unpartitioned. And the start and end blocks of all your
partitions and whether they are all Primaries or Primary and Extended.
    fdisk will hopefully tell me.

Now, if Ubuntu doesn't boot up, try to get a LiveCD -- Ubuntu's, Knoppix,
Mepis, etc. doesn't matter -- to run Linux fully in RAM on your notebook.
And type the same command above and post it here. We'll see if we can
fix your system, which is definitely screwed, but hopefully not badly.
