What can I check to fix system performance?

Hi,
I am considerably new Linux user, I would like your advice on what
values to check and change to fix performance problems. For example,
the product I used to build on the system in 12-14 hrs. started taking
23-24 hrs. I know its very generic question so I am providing some data
for you to answer this for me. Thanks a bunch !

Suse Linux 9.1 Enterprise/ 4 Gig Mem / 2 Gig Swap on amd64 4 processor
