Now that I have my GRUB problems solved, I need to start working on
updating my system. From my previous posts, you might have seen the
problems I had with graphic card incompatibilities which made it
impossible to do just a new installation of SuSE 10.
What I would like to update:
(a) kernel -- I'd like to have better USB and hot-plugging support
than is available in 8.1;
(b) gcc -- I would like to have the newest (3.4.x);
(c) KDE if necessary (currently running 3.0);
(d) Java (for running Eclipse + CDT plug-in for compiling C++ code);
(e) latest firewall;
(f) OpenOffice.
What is the recommended approach -- can I just tell Yast to update the
kernel and stick in the CD, or do I need to recompile it myself? Will
it trash my X configuration if I do so? SaX2 in SuSE 10 seems to have
a lot of trouble with my Diamond Fire GL1 graphics card...
If I need to compile the new kernel myself, wouldn't it be better to
compile the newest gcc first, then compile the kernel sources using
that?
Thanks!
