Building kernel 2.6.8: I get an (uncompressed) vmlinux. Help, please!

On Debian 3.1 ("Sarge"), I am trying to build a 2.6.8 kernel from the
kernel sources on the Debian DVD.

I've been through "make menuconfig", then "make", but what came out at
the end was a file called "vmlinux", 5.5 Mb big. I had expected to get a
"vmlinuz". I know this vmlinux isn't compressed, because if I run gzip
on it, the result is only 2.4 Mb big.

When I try to install this file with lilo (the version included with
Debian Woody), I get an error message telling me the thing is too big.

I've looked at the file .config for an option to enable compression: The
only thing I found remotely like it was "Configure Standard Kernel
features (for small systems) --->" whose help said "Only use this if you
really know what you're doing".

I've tried grepping all the Makefiles in the sources for "vmlinuz", again
without any luck.

Would somebody please give me some pointers to solving this problem?

Thanks in advance!
