So, I've got some Linux laptops to deal with in a new environment. The local
admins have an Active Directory server doing much if not all of their DHCP
management, and recommend using dynamic DNS so that the hostnames you select
for your laptop get registered but it gets an address from whichever subnet
you happen to physically connect to.
So far, so good. I'm uncertain, though, how best to associate dynamic DNS
with the Linux installations. I've mostly got FC4 to deal with, and I've
examined the nsupdate and ddclient tools, but both of those seem to be
associated with having some sort of authentication with the DNS server,
either shared key based or login based. But the Windows users don't seem to
have to deal with either of these: they simply select dynamic DNS in their
network setups, and they get hostnames based on the "machine name" in the
Windows configuration.
Does anyone know how to deal with this best? I'm finding lots of Google hits
on server configs, and configurations for specific dynamic DNS clients with
specific commercial servers, but nothing about just emulating the simplest
dynamic DNS setup comparable to the Windows clients.
