Of course. That was a typo, sorry.

All those stage1, stage2 etc. files in /boot/grub/ are
rewritten/updated when I run grub-install. At least, their
last-modified time changes.

I guess I'll have a look at it. If it works, than I'll be glad to
switch to lilo.
