grub menu oddity

I have a multi-boot system using grub installed in the mbr of my first hd.
It seems like every time my motherboard bios updates its configuration data
(such as after changing a video card), grub refuses to boot from any menu
selection (I think the message is Error 18). However, if I drop to a
command line and manually execute the root command for any menu item, I can
then go back to the menu and boot normally. All subsequent boots are
normal. The manual root command is exactly the same as the root command in
menu.lst. Anyone know why the root commands executed via the menu are
rejected but the same command executed via the command line is accepted?
Thanks
Richard
