It is an old ISA modem, not sure of brand name. I read somewhere that
in order to get ISA modems to work on the version of the kernel I have
(2.4.31), I need to re- make the kernel with the "ISA-PNP" option set
to "y". (or something like that).
If humanly possible, reconfigure the internal modem to _not_ use ISApnp,
instead. It might be a jumper setting.
At that point, of course, the burden will be on you to set the card to
an I/O base address and IRQ that are (1) sensible, and (2) made
available to the card by the BIOS Setup program. Towards that end, it's
highly recommended to disable other serial ports (e.g., on the
motherboard) so that there are at most one such port other than the modem
card.
Thus, the modem card can then be set to be /dev/ttyS0 ("COM1") or
/dev/ttyS1 ("COM2"), which are ports with standard, unambiguous
definitions that are easily recognised by software and not plagued by
IRQ-sharing or other problems.
