I have been contemplating upgrading my processor (currently an AMD
Athlon 133 GHz) i386 compatible processor to one of those new AMD 64
Dual core processors. Those sound pretty sweet. I was hesitant at first
until I noticed the pricetag which was around $500.00 or so. I thought
that was reasonable, since I was expecting upwards of $800 or more for
one of those.
The 3800+ dual core can be gotten for under $300.00. Check out;

Anyway, getting to my question, since I have never upgraded a processor
before, can anyone give me tips before starting out? I have an AMD
compatible motherboard, so I don't think I would have to go in and
switch out anything painful like purchasing a new motherboard to go
along with the new processor, right?
You need a new 64bit motherboard with 939 pin socket. The 1.33 GHz uses a
socket a motherboard.
After I upgrade my processor, I want to upgrade my memory. Currently,
256 MB of RAM just doesn't cut it for me anymore :) I want at least 1 -
2 GB of RAM, and I heard with the new 64 bit processors, some support up
to 16 GB of RAM. I suppose this process is relatively painless too?
Except to your pocketbook. ;-)
Quality memory sticks will run from approx $100.00 per stick, and up, for
1GB sticks.
Any tips, and suggestions are appreciated.
I like nForce chipsets on my motherboards, and you can bet you'll need a
new graphics card, and possibly a new power supply, to get the right
connectors for the new motherboard.
