Hi everybody!
I am formating this computer for my sister. Now this computer is very
old 500 MHz and 128mb. I am installing windows 98 and I would also like
to install a very light version of linux. Which distribution of Linux(
perferbably one that has a graphical interface and network capacity) do
you suggest. Thank You.
I'm running up-to-date Slackware 10.2 on a Pentium 233MX with 64 RAM using
Fluxbox as GUI. I prefer console on that machine, however, because GUI is
quite slow (it's the lack of RAM). With 128 MB RAM there should be no problem
for you. There is a free no-bloat version of the no-bloat slackware
distribution called "Vector Linux" which targets normal desktop users, and has
easy configuration menus. To be sure, with your amount of RAM your main
problem is the window manager and not the distribution. Avoid KDE and GNOME
and go for lightweight and scalable programs like xfce, fluxbox, enlightenment
(which comes with vectorlinux). Use fast and light Browsers like Dillo and
Opera instead of Firefox (which is quite slow in my experience), light word
processors like Abiword instead of heavy stuff like OpenOffice etc. In
general, don't use RAM-consuming "big" programs. When linux is up and running
check the running processes and services and use as less as possible. I got a
convenient desktop system with internet access and lots of drivers consuming
around 150 MB RAM (so your's would barely start paging).
