Re: suse intall help

Hello community !

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to install linux suse 10.0 (eval version). this is my first
time installing a linux OS. i've used unix before at university but
have never done something as big as install the whole OS. but i wanted
to find an alternate to windows, so im installing Suse on my PC. Suse,
because, after doing some research i found it is one of the more common
and user friendly distributions out there. ( i could be wrong on this)

So welcome to the club !

Most of us are looking for an alternative for Windows ...

anywho, when i boot up the PC to install suse everything works fine. i
choose the language, set the time and choose Gnome. after that i run
into problems at the proposal/overview section. i get an error on the
software section saying 'cannot open c///....../source ERROR:no
proposal' (not excatly that but something like it.) i have gone into
the software section. from what i figured out im suppose to select some
software package. but there are none listed there. i tried 'import'
under 'file' and found some '.sel' files on the cd but whenever i load
one of these, i get an error that it couldn't be loaded and floppy is
now unmounted....

It happens all during installation, right ?

Directly after choosing the graphical environment you confirmed that
selection in the lower right, right ?

As long as you are not supplying the important information but "not
exactly that but something like it." there will be nearly nobody out
here to help you ...

If you post next time please become more precise, o.k. ?

One suggestion:

If something like you described at that stage you should try to do a
complete installation from scratch with the other GUI (KDE instead of
GNOME). Just an idea ... (O.k., houghi will beat me if I opt for KDE
instead of GNOME ...)

im not sure what software packages (if any) i need and where to get
them from. im doing the installation on a seperate HDD which is blank
and is 40GB (which apparently Yast wants to partition into 2 drives,
which is fine with me.) im doing the installation from the DVD, not the
5 CDs.

All you need for the initial installation is available on the CDs. Next
question would be how you created the DVD ? By your own ? Downloaded a
DVD iso ? All MD5 checksums check and o.k. ?

Never give up !
