I'm trying to compile a 2.4 kernel for my old 486 laptop on my P2.2ghz
debian 3.1 box. I've compiled a lot of kernels before, but not trying to
do it this way. Anyway, after the config and make dep, the make bzImage
dies very quickly with this error messg:
/usr/src/linux-2.4.30/include/asm/processor.h:75: error: array type has
incomplete element type
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1
Any clues? Or is trying to compile for an older machine on a newer
one just not doable?
Age of the box is one thing: Age of the gcc, glibc, existing kernel
headers
and other core components are another and it may not be possible under
your
existing setup. What OS are you working from? And if you have to do this,
why not use a Knoppix bootable CD to provide the basic tools, and mount
the
hard drive to do the compilation in?
I'm running debian 3.1 on the pentium machine, and DSL (knoppix) on
the 486. The 486 has no cdrom, so to get DSL on it, I had to take the
drive out and put it in the pentium to do the install. DSL has no gcc,
no make, and so far I can't get either X or the wifi card to work --
which is why I'm trying to compile a kernel for it, to get better
functionality. Plus, since I installed DSL with the pentium, which has
pci and usb and different video, etc. all that stuff is in the DSL
kernel and the 486 laptop doesn't have any of it and complains.
I'm thinking knoppix is too broken to work for my 486.
Knoppix is pretty good, actually. But is there some reason you can't
liberate a CD drive from a parts bin and install it on the 486?
help anyway. Knoppix doesn't work with something this old -- impossible
to get X to work because it needs a cpq_avga driver for the mono LCD
screen. I had redhat installed previously and X worked with that, but
it's way, way too slow to use. And knoppix also can't get my wifi card
to work either, even tho it now loads the right "prism2_cs" driver, it
also seems to think it needs ndiswrapper. As far as I'm concerned,
knoppix is a total waste of time for this.
