Good HOWTO for xsane setup?

I have an Epson scanner to test with xsane, and although the vendor id/model are in the config file the scanner is not useful, and the best doc I could find is several years old and refers to 2.4 kernels and pre-udev device names.

I was told by someone who has one working that it "just dropped in and worked," but when I checked back he remembered the "after I fiddled with it all weekend" part. Fine for personal use, not for business use.

If there's a working doc I'd love it, but man pages are long on how to do things and short on which things to do.
