You are trying to save this file on a read-only disk. Please check
that you have typed the location correctly and try again.

I am logged-in as root. I have created other files in the /etc
directory successfully.

What does

mount

report on the system after the error message?

Questions:
1. Why won't it let me save the edited sudoers? (I'm under the
impression that as root I have authority to do anything)

It seems that the partition of your /etc (or maybe /) is
mounted read-only, maybe because of a detected file system error.

2. I'm new to this forum, so if I'm in the wrong place, please point
me to the right place

This is OK.
