configuration of display through command line?!?!

I installed SuSE 10 on my system. On the last step it ran a Hardware
configuration and detected my monitor type incorrectly (actually it was
quite close it chose "samsung syncmaster 4s" instead of "syncmaster
793MB"). It set a resolution too high for my video card (P III on
board). Thus my monitor would just not display the content, instead it
would display a warning dialog "Hz ?" indicating out of frequency
signal. As a result I could never see the xdm login terminal, let alone
access my system. I changed to tty1 and ran 'sax2' but it too went out
of range! In short I could not view any "graphical" output on my
system. I took the long route of reinstalling and reconfiguring the the
monitor settings at the last step and it worked!!!

Now my question is this....Was there a short cut to change the screen
resolution/sync frequencies via the command line, maybe by editing some
files etc?

PS: I did run Yast from the console (an interface similar to mc) but i
could not change any opitions at all! I could only read the hardware
configuration information!
