Try using lspci -v|more to tell you what pci devices you have -
will tell you say Intel 810 instead of I810 <brand-name> video card,
and such, but you need to know the chips anyways mostly not the
brand name.

Well, I tried it all but it made no difference at all.
Any other thoughts?

You said in your OP:
before setting up with ndiswrapper I run depmod -a I and get a series
of 'unresolved symbols' errors relating to wlan.o, wlan_acl.o etc
ath_hal ath_pci.o etc so don't set up the driver with ndiswrapper.

What *exactly* were the messages involved? I'm assuming - correct me
if I'm wrong that you got a clean compile and install without any
terminations?

From fresh install from CD

2.4.29 kernel

======>>>>>> Mouse works fine for this kernel <<<<<<======

When trying to install ndiswrapper the first thing I must check is
that there are no unresolved symbol errors.
But :
depmod -a gives :

depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/wlan.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Uresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/net/.o

Because of this I do not try to install ndiswrapper or network card
drivers.

2.6.12 kernel

========>>>>>> Nteworking works fine <<<<<<========

No unresolved symbol errors

Mouse pad is unusable . Same xorg.conf

Plug in PS/2 mouse and it works fine

I suspect the problem must be the mouse driver under X with 2.6.12
kernel.

I just noticed that you didn't do a make bzImage in the compile, but
instead did a simple make - this might make a difference, but for now I
think the main thing is to work through this - the mouse how-to as there
is something wrong about the mouse - the type of driver is my guess. If
you use a logitech driver for an MS type mouse, it will respond, but all
it does is jump arround the screen as opposed to tracking normally. IF
it's three button - and with X you need three buttons try this:
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/3-Button-Mouse.html

alternatively, try looking at your /etc/XF86Config file and changing the
mouse type - my guess is it's chosen wrong - you do *NOT* want
chord-middle or emulated 3 buttons if it is three button. Try microsoft
first then MS systems and finally logitech. If there is a difference in
the behavior, you are on the right track - probably when you set up X
you just looked at the brand name on the mouse and used that - that
does't always work - for example I have a Logitech 3 button ps/2 mouse,
but I use microsoft for it's type. This isn't the brand name, it's the
communication protocol.
