Try one of the many live cd distros first, Ubuntu or Knoppix are good,
that way nothing will be touched on any windows you have installed and it
will tell you if you have any hardware probs. Virtyually all distros these
days are painfree installs. A lot of what you will read on the web relates
to stuff from years ago when it was a pita to install.
