Last night I needed to recover my Ubuntu after re-intalling Windows.https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows?highlight=%28install%29%7C%28windows%29
Basically I followed the instructions on this page:
I have not done this, I keep promising myself that I should test it,
But here's my problem:
At the first time I ran "setup (hd0, 2)" ((hd0,2) is my Ubuntu
partition), with no luck. The computer still booted with Windows as
before. Grub was not there. So I followed the process again, this
time using "setup (hd0)" instead. But it seemed that the command
ruined the MBR and the computer couldn't boot from any of the
systems afterwards.
How can I get my OSs back? I just followed the instructions and had
no idea what was happening. Please explain to me what I had done.
Thanks a lot!
but the instructions look kosher to me.
You may have to give a blow by blow description of what you did, what
you typed and the responses you got, before anyone can help.
I'd use a Knoppix live CD to mount your old Ubuntu partitions, do a
"chroot", and rebuild your MBR.
