CUPS was working flawlessly for almost a year on my Fedora Core 4
server, serving a mix of Linux and Windows clients.
Then, this afternoon, I tried to print as usual through that server,
but I couldn't.
I quickly examined the system and discovered that:
(1) I could access the cups config daemon via http port 631 locally
(i.e. from 127.0.0.1) but not from client machines on the LAN.
(2) /etc/cups/cupsd.conf was somehow modified at 9:09 AM. This is
weird, since I swear that there is no one in the area that could have
modified it, except me (it's not connected to the Internet) - and I
swear that I wasn't even close to a computer at that time.
So, my question is: what could have possibly modified it? (and in such
a way that limits cups access to the local host (127.0.0.1) only)
BTW, I quickly fixed the problem by modifying the last line (in a
section labeled by "Lines below are automatically generated - DO NOT
EDIT") from:
Listen 127.0.0.1:631
to
Listen *:631
FC4 might have a security thing which you recently upgraded which now
checks cups and alters the Listen line, because it is dangerous to allow
anyone (eg me) to alter your cups configuration.
would strongly suggest you put in a minimal series of hosts that you can
administer from. Allowing me to do it is not safe.
