I am having some problems that I have described here.
lsusb, dmesg,
On googling around I have come across a linux distro called BG-Rescue
Linux found here.
http://omnibus.uni-freiburg.de/~giannone/rescue/current/#Top
On going through the docs I think I will have to learn how to mount disk
volumes - IDE and USB and a network adapter USB.
Is there some info on how I can check whether the USB hard disk and the
USB adapter have been detected and get them to work?
The USB Disk I intend to attach via the quite common USB IDE adapter
using Oxford Semiconductor chipset and the USB network adapter
SMC2206ETH EZ Connect.
Will there be a way to detect them and configure them?
also, all of the other basic tools available under linux. I notice the
ntfsprog in your chosen distribution is old. I would prefer a newer
version, and I would prefer a full set of standard tools. I recommended
Slax.
If your data is at all critical, I would consider getting professional
help. Although it is a chance to force yourself to learn some new
tools, doing so in a live environment with the _only_ good copy of files
is also a chance to f**k yourself. If you decide to go ahead, all of the
general caveats apply.
I am the bystander handing you a fire axe to deal with burning toast. How
you use it is up to you.
