There's another theory claiming the "s" in sbin means
"superuser", since it is in root's $PATH. Though both theory
might well be true. ;-)
Except that "superuser" was not the term used, it was "root" since the
early days of Unix AFAIK.
Which is the superuser, or better correctly defined as the user
with UID 0.
Now Linux FHS has the third explanation:
"/sbin : System binaries
Purpose
Utilities used for system administration (and other root-only
commands) are stored in /sbin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/local/sbin.
/sbin contains binaries essential for booting [..]"
It seems the understanding of the "s" might have changed during a
few decades unix? ;-)
