Everything has its place rather than dumping things randomly around the hard
disk.
bin = binary
True, but there were utilities which could be called by the shell
to do almost anything a modern shell can do. The shell has been a
useful programming language for more than 25 years.
Unix goes furher back than that IIRC
I once knew a man who told me in the mid-50s he learned to program using patchcords.
I learned in 1967 on a Sylvania remote time share computer.
A long time ago I came across a tree showing the splits in language development.
The problem is most anyone can claim and support most anything unless the issue is shortly after the patchcord programming language.
As to how times have changed as a sophomore in college in 1965 I was offered a job as a programmer at Oak Ridge. After protesting ignorance, I was assured they would teach me.
Unlike almost every other field of technology computer folks have done their own thing from day one. It is more like art or religion and a technology. I mean there are limited variations on the technology of cars or lighting or most every other technology. All computer folks need is a following and an idea can run away.

Consider Jews have said they will continue to try to murder Nasrallah, the
leader of Hezbollah, but he has not said he will try to murder the leader of
Israel. Who is the most civilized?
