I'm trying to install FC5 on my laptop (just burnt a boot cd).
However, I

folder. But setup still can't find the file, saying the file
http://mirrors.dotsrc.org//fedora/5/i386/os/stage2.img (note the
double slash after .org) can't be retrieved. I have no idea why FC5
automatically adds an extra slash, which I suspect is the reason why
it can't retrieve the file.

Stage 2 is at:

http://mirrors.dotsrc.org/fedora/5/i386/os/Fedora/base/

My fault: The link I had tried was the one I had written in my first message
but without stage2.img in the end. FC5 setup would automatically append
/Fedora/base to the end of the link provided to it. So still a no-go, it's
the double slash which is tricky.
