I've installed FC 6 several times onto three partitions (swap, / and
/boot). The install process completes successfully and the
post-install config also completes. The screen goes blank and then the
monitor goes into standby. FC 4 worked fine.
Reboots (resets and cold boots) get me to the same spot. I'm quite
disappointed.
The only errors in the boot process are: an ACPI notification early in
the process (ACPI: Invalid PBLK length [5]) and I have no idea what
that is, and the CPU speed service (Fatal: Error inserting
acpi_cpufreq...) but I go through the interactive config and prevent it
from starting.
Any ideas to get this running?
TIA

If FC6 boots fine then it is your X configuration that is the problem.
If not then in /boot/grub/menu.lst
remove
rhgb quiet
in the kernel line to see what happens.
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/
#rhgb quiet
title Fedora Core (2.6.19-1.2895.fc6)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.19-1.2895.fc6.img
BTW, when the Rescue cd is done booting use the chroot command.
I've installed the i686 kernel by using the "linux i686" command at
install time. No change, but again, I wasn't expecting to be the
problem.
I've attempted to use system-config-display three times. The first
time (with -v) was surprisingly successful but I still didn't get a
successful boot to the gui after a restart. The second time (with
-reconfig) failed when the screen when black and the monitor went to
standby. The third (with -v) was also unsuccessful. Trying
system-config-display --set-resolution=1024x768 as a test seems to have
no effect on the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
I've followed the advice at
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=127305, also
unsuccessfully and checked the ATI pages for any guidance.
Where am I going wrong?
TIA
