Fedora Core 6 Display Problems

Now that I've got Fedora Core 6 up and running, I've got a new problem
to wrestle with...the display is all wonky.
I have a 17" Flat-Panel LCD monitor that should display 1280x1024 at
60Hz.
Unfortunately, every time I boot up, the system goes to 1280x800 at
75Hz...which looks quite trashy on my monitor.
I've tried changing the resolution under System->Administration-
Display, but when I reboot the settings I changed go away.
I've tried changing the resultion under System->Preferences->Screen
Resolution, but the closest to optimum it allows me to choose is
1280x800 at 60Hz...which looks okay, but is a bit streched
vertically. Still, when I reboot, any changes I made go away.
So, I thought I'd change my xorg.conf directly...this seemed to work
for a lot of people on various forums around the web...so, under Modes
I add "1280x1024" and reboot. Still can't select 1280x1024 under
System->Preferences->Screen Resolution, and any changes I make go away
when I reboot. If I remove all modes EXCEPT "1280x1024" in xorg.conf,
it still doesn't make any difference.
So...it seems I've exhausted the knowledge of the various forums I've
been able to find when searching under the search terms I thought
might bring up any useful information. Do any of you have a
suggestion about what I could try next?
Cheers,
Joe
