Heh. You've my sympathy: headphone function is quite distinct from
microphone function. But you don't mention what type of headphones you
have, and what motherboard or audio chipsets. I've actually given up
on spending much time working with the built-in audio on Linux boxes,
because the chipsets change so fast it can waste many hours of my
worktime getting them running. Even on the Windows systems they
provide drivers for, there are often weird flipping settings that
games stomp on or driver updates reset and screw up.

USB headphones have become my friend: they've been working fine for me
under RHEL 4 and RHEL 5 and on other systems. But if you need help
with thse, give us some more information about your hardware setup.
And do these headphones work on other systems?
