It's difficult to give you helpful advice if you don't describe exactly
what went wrong.

True. If all you need is file-sharing, Kerberos authentication and
Samba for file-sharing are plenty, and you don't need or want Winbind.
If you want single sign-on and a replacement for the various
adventures of Active Directory, look for guidelines on migrating
*that* to Linux.
