Re: Help finding files

I am using Debian 3.1 and seem to have lost some files...

I have directory A and in directory A there is directory B and
directory C. I moved directory B into directory C and then I moved
directory B back into directory A. Then I removed directory C.

Now all the files in directory B are gone... when I do a "locate' for
the files it shows them all where I think they should be but when I
try to list the directorys within directory B it says they do not
exist...

One important thing, locate looks in a database, it's not actually
going through the hard drive each time you run it.

So it will tell you where everything used to be, until the next
time updatedb is run. Well, since on my system updatedb points
to slocate, I imagine some systems may not have the alias and
you have to run slocate.

I would think that by default, updatedb is run as a cron job
each night, so you have to wait till the next day, and have
to be sure your computer is left on overnight.

Or else run updatedb right then and there, and after the
hard drive churns enough, you'll be able to use locate to
find things in their new locations.
