Consider Debian/Testing or Debian/Unstable. You couls also download the
source for the packages you need to update from Unstable and backport them
yourself. It usually consists of little more than building the package on
your Stable system.

Download the Debian sources for the packages you wish to change, make your
changes, build the package, and install it. It's quite easy, and you need
know little or nothing about Debian packaging. There is no need to build
the entire system from source just to make some changes.
