openldap and nss_ldap.. help!

Hi,
i'm configuring Redhat with openldap for authenticate Linux users on
AD domain M$.
I don't need that linux users can access on microsoft resource, my aim
is only that windows user can logon to linux with his same account.
So, i think that when i logon linux box, it query auth on DC windows
through pam_ldap and nss_ldap.

So i don't understand if is enough Openldap client and modules
(pam, nss) for this work, or is mandatory also install Openldap server?
And, linux have to join on windows domain, or i can authenticate linux
users without join the server (i hope)?

Another question is; also kerberos service is mandatory? (i don't need
SSO)

thanks very much!
Andrea
