What actually is the difference between a 'live'cd and the cd you install to
the HD..?

Depends on which cd. http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

Basically live cds run linux from the cd without installing onto the HD.
That runs a little slow. You may have the option to install onto the
HD where it will run faster.

Depending on cd, It may go ahead and do a linux install, get updates,
install additional programs and you have a full blown linux installation on HD.

Kind of like a win 3.1 versus a XP Home installation.
