Re: Fedora Core 6 Memory Stick problem

William Paul Vrotney <vrotney@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> writes:

Under Fedora Core 3 my memory stick worked fine. But after installing
Fedora Core 6 and doing the same set up (which follows) I get an error when
trying to mount:

mount /mnt/memstick
mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device

What I did to setup was in /etc/fstab

/dev/sda1 /mnt/memstick auto noauto,user 0 0

and in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

mknod /dev/sda b 8 0
mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1

Note that when I reboot I see in /var/log/messages

kernel: usb 4-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2

which is exactly the Sony Model of my memory stick that I've been using all
along. It seems that the kernel recognizes the actual Memory Stick that
I've been using in fc3 but why would it complain now with fc6 that it is not
a block device? Any ideas of leads?

Thanks

Do a clean install with Fedora 8. FC6 has been EOL'd for some time, so
you will not get any further bug fixes or security patches.

Then re-try your USB stick.

You should not have to make any modifications to the config files as you
have done above, as udev will pick up the USB stick when you insert it
into a USB slot and it should then automount (unless you modify the
default settings) and show up on your desktop as an icon.
