Do you have a true hardware RAID controller, or are you using what's called
BIOS RAID (aka ATARAID, fakeraid)? This is not true hardware RAID.
can i check the status of the mirror without rebooting?

AFAIK most hardware RAID controllers *do* have a way of letting you monitor
the status of the mirror without rebooting. You will need to look up the
exact model of your controller, but it should be possible.
AFAIK most fakeraid controllers do not have such a facility. I could be
wrong, but mine certainly needs a reboot in the BIOS to do any management or
monitoring of the arrays (it's a Silicon Image SiI3112A).
If you don't know which you have, capture the output of lspci and post it
here.
