weird problem hitting the backspace key

After i hit the backspace key on my OpenSUSE system,
the system 'generates' a space after deleting the previous character

so, if i type 'ls' and hit the backspace-key, it reads 'l '

where can i start, research where this problem comes from ?
or does anyone know how to get rid of this problem?
