Re: Upgrading from CentOS 5.2 to 5.3 on a *live* system?

Hi,

We have a system with CentOS 5.2 that is up and running and is supposed
to remain up and running continuously.

As the subject says: I'd like to know whether it is safe to run yum
update to upgrade the system while it is running.

It's actually two machines running CentOS 5.2; one of them is running
PostgreSQL, version 8.3.x installed from source; the other machine is
running a piece of custom software, written in C++ and using libpqxx 3.0
to connect to the PG backend --- pqxx also installed from source on the
CentOS 5.2 machine.

I notice that among the available upgrades is the compiler and related
libraries (glibc, libgcc, libstdc++, etc.), so it worries me a little.
Maybe I should expect the newer libraries to install without removing the
previous ones, so that the programs that are already compiled (linked) to
those older-version libraries remain running properly?

Anything that I may be missing?

Thanks for any info / advice / tips !

I run RHEL5, and it automatically does little updates from time to time.
But it also does the big ones; i.e., from 5 to 5.1, 5.1 to 5.2, and 5.2 to 5.3. If I do not pay attention, these happen without my noticing. Of course, I should pay attention because kernel updates do not get put into effect until I reboot the system and diddle /boot/grub/grub.config
So I do that. I did miss one kernel update by not paying attention.

For the big updates, I am glad I have a FiOS Internet connection. When I was on dial-up, these could take several days.
