Migrating newby looking for help

Hi Experts,

I am migrating from Win2000 to Mepis Linux and I saw a huge amount of information on web sites but there are often holes in the information.

My present computer has a Pentium 4 2.27GHz [no Pentium 4 Prescott with EM64T] and all the other necessities for the 32 bit version. When I came to the download I found:

SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.0.06-rel_32.iso 25-Apr-2009 21:00 673M
SimplyMEPIS-CD_8.0.06-rel_32.md5sum 25-Apr-2009 16:07 67

What is the difference between these two and does Linux have its own formatting prog for an unformatted partition?
